Mission Statement

Our Mission

Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together. - Psalm 34:3

The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever (Westminster Shorter Catechism). This is the purpose of man’s design, that in glorifying Yahweh God we discover our greatest and only lasting joy. The true and living God of the Bible is not a cosmic kill joy as perceived by many, but He is the actual source of that joy. The glory of God and the true pleasure of humanity are one and the same. It is only in glorifying Him that we discover the deep delight for which all our hearts long (Psalm 37:4). Our driving purpose is to fulfill the great commission as we invite people come to Jesus Christ, glorify His name with us, and discover this delight.

First Baptist Church Cherokee exists to most glorify God and make His name great among the nations. Our practical purpose is to cultivate a deeper passion for the glory of God through Christ exulting worship, God connecting prayer, God centered teaching, and Holy Spirit empowered evangelism.

Our Strategy

God Centered Teaching

2 Tim. 3:16-4:1-5: God centered teaching/preaching is not driven by a preference, program, or the felt needs of people. It is fueled by a deep passion for the glory of God and is expositional and exegetical in nature. Scripture proclaims “…man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord” (Deut. 8:3). It is only through a steady diet of God’s word that believers can cultivate their delight in Christ and enlarge their passion for the glory of God.

Christ Exulting Worship

Psalm 29:2, Rev. 5:9-14: It is pertinent that a body of believers be encouraged to find delight in worshiping Jesus Christ. This worship should be passionate, experiential, expressive, and guided by the standard of the word of God. Biblical worship that is heartfelt deepens one’s passion for the glory of God.

God Connecting Prayer

Isa. 56:7, 1 John 5:14-15: It is essential that the church of Jesus Christ be reclaimed as a “house of prayer for all nations.” The people of God must be equipped to pray in a manner that connects with God. This means that we must learn to pray based on the will of God as revealed in the word of God. Praying biblical substance that connects with the heart of God and transcends our present circumstances will move us into a position to most glorify God and delight in knowing Him.

Holy Spirit Empowered Evangelism

Acts 1:8: It is absolutely imperative that a church burn with a God centered evangelistic passion. Holy Spirit empowered evangelism is the heart of effectively winning lost souls to Jesus Christ. A church that has a heart for sharing Jesus Christ with all peoples at all costs will most glorify Christ in the world. Furthermore, the church that delights in getting personally involved in being used by God to help people find their greatest joy in Jesus Christ will deepen its own pleasure in glorifying God.
